SQL Express supports a feature called "User Instances" or RANU (Run As Normal User). This article describes an issue that a web application developer might face when using IIS 7.5 together with SQL Express. Application Pool Identities are generated automatically and don't require passwords either - management costs go down.Īs with every new feature there are certain drawbacks and this is no different with the Application Pool Identity feature. It allows the effective isolation of Application Pools without having to maintain a user account for each and every Application Pool that is supposed to be sandboxed. IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 supports a new feature called "Application Pool Identity".
